Libre Office for docx Documents

To minimize reading and editing compatibility problems between teacher and students across operating systems and word processors, TPS supports only the .docx format for editable word processing documents. Google Docs, Mac Pages, and other formats are not supported or permitted (Google Docs or Mac Pages applications may be used, but the document must be exported to docx format to submit as an assignment for TPS.)

You may use Microsoft Word for docx documents, but usually a license or subscription is required to be purchased. A free cross-platform alternative supported by TPS is Libre Office Writer. Libre Office works on Windows and Mac and produces universally-readable and editable docx files. To make it easier to produce docx files in Libre Office, we recommend the following settings:

  • Options –> Preferences –> Load/Save –> General –> select “Text Document” from the “Document Type” drop-down –> select “Word 2007-2019 (*.docx)” from the “Aways save as” drop-down –> click Apply and OK.
  • When you save a document, make sure “Automatic file name extension” is checked.
